Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli won a chaotic Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, July 19, holding off Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 1.952 seconds to take his sixth victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The 19-year-old Italian started from pole position and briefly lost the lead to Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the start before reclaiming it down the Kemmel Straight. Verstappen ultimately finished third, more than 11 seconds behind, while Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton crossed the line fourth after serving a five-second time penalty for a first-lap collision with Antonelli's teammate, George Russell.
That incident proved costly for Russell, who was pushed into the gravel trap at Turn 6 while attempting to pass Hamilton and was forced to retire, ending his afternoon early and denying him a chance to close the points gap to his teammate. The clash triggered a Safety Car period and left Hamilton facing a post-race investigation for an unsafe release from the pits, in addition to the penalty he already received.
Antonelli's win was his first since the Monaco Grand Prix and moved him to 179 points in the drivers' standings, 25 points clear of Russell in second on 154. Hamilton sits third on 147, with Leclerc fourth on 108 following his runner-up finish at Spa. McLaren's Lando Norris recovered from a grid penalty to finish seventh after qualifying third, while teammate Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five.
Behind the front-runners, Racing Bulls continued a strong run of form, with Isack Hadjar climbing from the back of the grid to sixth and Arvid Lindblad also scoring points. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto picked up a point in eighth for the German manufacturer's Formula 1 debut season.
With Antonelli now building a clear cushion at the top of the standings, attention turns to whether Mercedes can convert his early-season form into a maiden drivers' title, and whether Russell can bounce back from a weekend that did lasting damage to his championship hopes. The Formula 1 calendar continues with the next round expected in the coming weeks as the season moves toward its final stretch.
